Protect the cylinder, don’t just change it

Replacing a forced cylinder with an ordinary model means keeping the same weakness. We fit a high-security cylinder of the right length, so that it does not stick out of the door, and if needed add a security escutcheon or a cylinder guard to stop it being pulled out.

On a security door, an A2P-certified multipoint lock, such as the Picard Ermétis or the Présence 3, adds several locking points to the high-security cylinder. On a standard door, a correctly sized branded cylinder and a steel escutcheon already make a big difference. All the other cases are described on our lock change in Paris page.

The rules for a properly fitted cylinder

  • The right length: it should stick out by only a few millimetres on the landing side.
  • Protection: a steel escutcheon or cylinder guard, screwed on from the inside.
  • A reputable brand: a high-security cylinder, with keys protected by a card of ownership.

Around Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est

Very busy buildings, many flats let by the week: cylinders get heavy use here and keys change hands. A cylinder with a protected key limits copies made without your consent.

Faubourg-Saint-Denis and Faubourg-Saint-Martin

Old buildings set around courtyards, often without a caretaker, original front doors: a cylinder that is too long and sticks out of the door offers an easy grip. We replace it with a cylinder of the right size, protected by a security escutcheon.

Along the Canal Saint-Martin

Ground-floor flats on the quays, former shops turned into homes: the door sometimes opens straight onto the street. An A2P-certified multipoint lock is then a must.

Forced cylinder: your questions

Send us a photo of the damaged cylinder: it often reveals the type of attack.

How can I tell if my cylinder has been forced?

Scratches around the keyhole, a cylinder that spins freely or sticks out further than before, a key that no longer goes in: these are all signs of an attempt. Have the lock checked, even if the door held.

Should I report a mere attempt to the police?

It is advisable: the police report goes with your claim to your insurer, who may cover the replacement depending on your policy. The detailed invoice we leave you serves as proof.

Can a cylinder guard be fitted to any door?

To most, yes: it is fixed from the inside, around the cylinder. On some very thin old doors, we adapt the model or suggest another solution.

Should I change the cellar lock too?

Yes, if its keys were on the same key ring, or if the cellar has been broken into. For a cellar that keeps being forced, a security cellar door puts an end to the problem.
