After a burglary: what to do, in order
On the day of a burglary, everything happens at once. Here is the order we recommend, to protect your home and leave nothing out of your insurance claim.
- Make your home lockable againIf the door still closes, a new cylinder; if not, a temporary lock-up.
- Report it to the policeAt the police station, or with an online pre-complaint, listing the stolen items.
- Notify your insurer of the theftWithin two working days, unless your policy allows longer.
- Keep the evidencePhotos of the door, the old cylinder, receipts for the stolen goods.
- Upgrade to an A2P lockOften required by the insurer for the policy to continue.
- Change the other locksCellar, letterbox: if keys were taken.
The A2P lock and the invoice your insurer asks for
After a theft, many home insurance policies require an A2P-certified lock, sometimes with a minimum number of stars. The certification is marked on the lock and appears on our invoice, with the brand, model and price: that is the document your insurer will ask you for.
An A2P* lock resists a break-in attempt for a few minutes, an A2P** for longer, and an A2P*** longer still. After a burglary, we recommend a three-star (A2P***) lock, especially if your home is exposed. The old cylinder can be kept for the loss adjuster if your insurer asks.
On the invoice, we state
- The brand and model: of the lock and cylinder fitted.
- The certification: A2P and its number of stars.
- The address and date: of the job, with a breakdown of prices incl. VAT.

Burglary and locks: your questions
Does your insurer need a particular document? Tell us, and we’ll add it to the invoice.
Does insurance pay for the lock change?
Often, yes, but it all depends on your policy: theft cover generally pays for repairing the door and replacing the damaged lock. Keep the police report and our invoices, and reread your policy’s terms.
My insurer requires an A2P lock: which one should I choose?
Check the number of stars your policy requires. A Vachette Exclusive or a Picard Présence 3, both A2P*** certified, suit policies that require three stars; the Picard Ermétis, A2P*, is enough when one star is required.
Should I wait for the loss adjuster before changing the lock?
No: you cannot leave your home open. Keep the old cylinder and take photos before we start; they will be used for the assessment.
Do you cover the whole 18th, even at night?
Yes, from place de Clichy to porte de la Chapelle, at any hour: a burglary discovered when you get home in the evening should not leave your home open until the next day.
