From a single-point lock to a three-point lock

A single-point lock only secures the door at handle height: levering above or below it is sometimes enough to force it open. With three points, the door is held at the top, middle and bottom. It is the upgrade we carry out most often in the old buildings of the 11th.

On a solid wooden door, the three-point lock is either set into the thickness of the door (mortice) or fixed to its inside face (surface-mounted), with rods running up and down. We first check the thickness of the wood and the condition of the frame: on a door that is too thin or split, door reinforcement is the safer choice. Other situations are covered on our lock change in Paris page.

Before changing your lock

  • Measure the thickness of the door: it determines which model fits.
  • Check the existing deadbolt: it can be kept and keyed alike with the new lock.
  • Count how many keys you need: family, caretaker, a trusted neighbour.

Locks of the 11th, from one courtyard to the next

In the 11th, the buildings change every hundred metres: here are the locks we come across most often.

Oberkampf and Jean-Pierre-Timbaud

Small 19th-century buildings, wooden doors that are often original: the single-point lock is still common here. This is where upgrading to three points makes the biggest difference to a home’s security.

  • Rue Oberkampf
  • Rue Jean-Pierre-Timbaud
  • Rue Saint-Maur
  • Rue des Trois-Bornes

Boulevard Voltaire and Richard-Lenoir

Haussmann-era buildings with thick doors: here we fit three- or five-point mortice locks, invisible from the landing, with a security cylinder.

  • Boulevard Voltaire
  • Boulevard Richard-Lenoir
  • Rue Amelot
  • Rue Popincourt

Courtyards and passages of the faubourg Saint-Antoine

Former workshops converted into homes: glazed doors, sliding doors, wide openings. We adapt the lock to the door, and recommend door reinforcement when the joinery is too light.

  • Cour de l’Étoile-d’Or
  • Passage de la Main-d’Or
  • Rue de Charonne
  • Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine

Towards Nation and Philippe-Auguste

Buildings from the 1960s to the 1980s and more recent developments: original three-point locks are the norm here, and a new set of cylinders solves most cases of lost keys.

  • Avenue Philippe-Auguste
  • Rue de Montreuil
  • Rue Léon-Frot
  • Boulevard de Charonne

Three-point locks in the 11th: frequently asked questions

Not sure which model? A photo of the edge of the door is all we need to advise you.

Can a three-point lock be fitted to any door?

On most solid wooden doors, yes. The door must be thick enough to house the lock case, or have a flat inside face for a surface-mounted lock. On a hollow or split door, we would rather recommend door reinforcement.

How much does upgrading to three points cost?

It all depends on the lock chosen and the work needed on the door; the table gives a rough idea. The exact amount, fitting included, is given to you before the job, based on a photo of the door.

Does the key to the building change too?

No: the building’s main door is the responsibility of the co-owners, so its key or fob stays the same. Only the key to your flat is new.

Does a three-point lock make opening the door harder day to day?

No: the key works all three points in a single movement. The handle and keyhole stay in their usual place.
