House front doors: which lock?

A house has no caretaker and no neighbours across the landing to notice a forced door: its lock has to hold out on its own. On a thick, solid door, an A2P-certified multipoint lock secures the full height of the door; on a lighter door, a three-point lock with a protected cylinder already makes a big difference.

For a family, a keypad lock saves having lots of keys cut: everyone has their own code, which can be changed whenever needed. Garden doors and garden gates are fitted with locks designed for outdoor use. Every scenario is covered on our lock change in Paris page.

Three details to check on a house door

  • The thickness of the door leaf: it determines whether a mortice lock or a surface-mounted lock is used.
  • The hinges: on the street side, they must be protected so the door cannot be lifted off.
  • The cylinder: it must not stick out from the door, or it can be wrenched out.

House locks: your questions

A photo of the door, from the street side and from inside, is often all we need to advise you.

Is a keypad lock as secure as a key lock?

The locking itself remains mechanical, on several points: what changes is how it opens, with a code rather than a key. Codes can be changed at any time, with no copies to make, and most models have an emergency opening in case the batteries run low.

Can I have the same key for the door, the garden gate and the garage?

Often, yes: their locks just need to take the same type of cylinder. We then supply cylinders that all open with a single key; for the garden gate, which is exposed to the rain, we choose a model designed for outdoor use.

My front door is glazed: can it be made secure?

Yes: a multipoint lock that engages in the frame, and a double cylinder with no thumb-turn on the inside, so that nobody can open the door by reaching through a broken pane.

Should I change the lock when buying a house?

It’s wise: you never know how many keys the previous owners, their relatives or their tradespeople have kept. A new cylinder on each door is usually enough, without touching the locks themselves.
