The Faïencerie, an eco-district in the heart of the town

The name recalls the earthenware factories of the 19th century: the town once had as many as seven. On the Faïencerie site, in the heart of the town, the council is building an eco-district with a school complex, a sports hall, family housing, shops and an 8,000 m² park. My house is in the residential south of the town: do I need a deadbolt as well as the lock?

On the door of an old house, a lock with a single locking point puts up little resistance to a break-in attempt. Adding a security deadbolt, or replacing the lock with a multipoint lock, strengthens the door without changing it. The locksmith also looks at the service or garage door, which can be the weak point of the house.

My keys were stolen with my bag near the station: do I need to change the lock?

Yes, especially if there was a document with your address in the bag. Changing the cylinder is usually enough, from €90 incl. VAT: the stolen keys become useless. File a complaint and keep the locksmith’s invoice, your insurer will ask for both.

I rent a flat in Bourg-la-Reine: who pays for the lock change?

If you have lost your keys, the opening and the cylinder change are in principle your responsibility. If the lock is worn with age or faulty, speak to the owner first: replacing worn-out fittings is down to them. In both cases, the itemised invoice serves as proof.
